Breaching The Lower 4 Snake River Dams

Problems
  • The Chinook Salmon and the Southern Resident Orcas will go extinct if we do not breach the dams in the next six months.

  • The Four Lower Snake River Dams inhibit millions of salmon from spawning every year.

  • These particular dams provide little to no power to the grid each year while it costs tax payers hundreds of millions of dollars in maintenance costs.

  • With the railway paralleling the river, it does not need to be used for transportation whatsoever.

  • If these dams are breached it will take a minimum of three years for the salmon population recover. (See our "Temporary Ban of Salmon Fishing" campaign for more on this topic).

  • Breaching these dams will save our Southern Resident Orcas by allowing millions of Salmon who call this part of the river home, to once again spawn and re-populate our seas with desperately needed fish. The Orcas and the Fishermen both win with this outcome.

  • Breaching these dams will save the tax payers hundreds of millions of dollars each year in maintenance.

  • The process of breaching the dams can be completed utilizing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 2002 Environmental Impact Statement  using Alternative 4 to breach the lower four snake river dams immediately in 2019.

  • Breaching the lower four snake river dams will end up costing only $100 million compared to the hundreds of millions it costs in annual repairs for such antiquated dams. Last week alone the lower four snake river dams lost $3.5 million in just maintenance costs.

  • Individuals like yourself made the topic of breaching the Lower 4 Snake River Dams a major conversation at the  Orca Task Force Meetings.

  • Your letters, phone calls, and 40k public comments have urged Governor Inslee's conversations about breaching  the lower four snake river dams in 2022. This is unacceptable because our Orcas and Salmon will be extinct by 2022 without breaching the dams, but this does show the positive progress.

  • The power is always with the people, let's all continue calling and writing so together we can save our Orcas and Salmon from extinction.

Actions

Sign the petition HERE to demand the breaching of the Lower Four Snake River Dams in 2018 which will enable the Salmon to spawn, saving the Chinook Salmon and the Southern Resident Orcas from extinction.

Please Call, Write or Fax the politicians and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers below, demanding they breach the Lower Four Snake River Dams immediately supplementing the 2002 Environmental Impact Statement in 2018 and use the Alternative #4 to breach the lower four snake river dams this year. This is an emergency! Governor Inslee absolutely has the power to move forward with this action if he gives the Corps of Engineers the go ahead. If these dams are not breached, both the Chinook Salmon and the Southern Residents will go extinct in the next few years. The pressure you place on these politicians and the Corps of Engineers is our last hope. Where the last 30 years of law suits against the Snake River Dams and the Kinder Morgan Pipeline have failed the Orcas...YOU make a difference with your actions!
